dalegarth-300THE LAKE DISTRICT - Travel & Destinations

The English Lake District contains some of the finest scenery in the United Kingdom and the county of Cumbria boasts a landscape that sweeps up from the golden beaches of the West Coast to the highest point in England at Sca Fell Pike in Wasdale, there the magnificent mountain range forms the backdrop to what has been voted Britain’s Best View. From the hub of Great Gable the fells radiate out in all directions, between these rock spokes are the beautiful lakes among which are those of Winderemere, Coniston and Ullswater are well served with cruising and pleasure craft.

Around the fringes of the mountains, the larger towns of Whitehaven and Barrow celebrate the maritime heritage of the region, vibrant Kendal forms as the southern gateway to the Lake while in the east, is the historic market town of Penrith. All the larger towns have excellent shopping, eating and entertainment shipsfacilities in compact and interesting centres.

The Lake District is synonymous with the outdoors and whether your taste is for the wilderness and the big mountains with breathtaking views, the quiet valleys and idyllic lowlands and lakes or a the exhilaration that comes from climbing, biking or water sports, the region is the ideal playground for the adventurous.trees-300

The main mode of transport around the county is by road and it soon becomes clear to the traveller that a little exploration can lead to a sometimes unexpected reward of a magnificent panoramic view or a charming wayside hostelry. Travelling by car is not the sole means of getting about, though, and the coastal plains provide passengers with spectacular rail journeys which can be linked into journeys inland by steam locomotive at Ravenglass and Haverthwaite.

Direct Car and Van Hire provide a Lakeland Touring Service via our partner company, and will be pleased to arrange any general or particular tours of this beautiful landscape that you may wish. For more information about this service, contact us anytime; we look forward the helping you make the most of your time with us.
